Girls and dolls - how do they choose?

I got Felicity because my mom suggested I get her b/c of I have red hair and greenish/hazelish eyes and she has red hair and green eyes. but I love her stories the best and my second favorite is Kirsten.

I got my dolls in the order that my best friend at the time had gotten them in. I also think the order I read the books in had something to do with it. I was going to get them in the order of the books I had read but when Kit was introduced, I just had to get her instead of Addy.

When I got my first doll, I picked one that looked nothing like me. (I was 8).

At the time there was only Kirsten, Molly, and Samantha to choose from, but I picked the one whose stories were the best to me. I picked Kirsten. I loved to go out on the lake and sit at the front of the boat and pretend I was Kirsten on her journey to America.

My AGoT from when I was younger is red hair and brown eyes. (I have brown hair.) I picked the one I WANTED to look like, not the one I actually looked like.

I chose my Samantha doll for her "pretty little outfits" when I was younger. I look NOTHING like her though. Now I pick them off thier stories and personality. Not looks really. Except for if I think thier ugly or somethin. lol

My DD and nieces all chose the historical that looked the most like them. Molly, Samantha, and Kit. They didn't read the books until they got yhe doll but each found something in the book that they really related too. Plus, when they are young you can kinda sway them [img]wink.gif[/img] to your way of thinking.

When I was younger I never made up my mind, so I never got one. *grins* I always loved Samantha and Felicity though.

I chose Kirsten mainly because I used to look like her (since then my hair has darkened to light brown-red, though). I also liked her pioneer stories. I always thought that girls usually chose dolls that resembled them, and that was my reasoning for why Felicity never sold that well for so many years. I know she didn't sell as well as the others because I work at an American Girl summer camp and it's very rare for there to be a Felcity doll there, since fewer girls have red hair than brown or blonde.

My daughters both chose their first doll based on the character they most identified with. My youngest was seven when she got her first American Girl doll. She started reading all the stories by herself at age six and a half and by her seventh birthday had read them all. She chose Felicity because of her spunkiness. My oldest is ten and she got her first doll when she was nine. Again, she read all the books and chose Kit because she identified with her determination. All my daughters' friends have chosen there dolls based on whom they most identified with after they read all the stories by themselves.
